summer fashion series - day 1

5/2/16

Hello there and welcome to my first fashion series here at Lemon Lane Style.  I will be focusing on summer clothing specifically targeting women over 50 but I think you'll find that the pieces are timeless and would be just as appropriate and fun on younger women in a non professional environment.

pink t-shirt and skinny jeans

If you're like me you tend to reach for the same four or five items in your wardrobe over and over. I'm
hoping this series will show you how changing out a few accessories can breathe new life into those same old clothes.

With this in mind I will be styling the same four basic bottoms over the next couple of weeks...

1.  white straight leg jeans (similar)
2.  olive shorts (similar)
3.  cuffed skinny blue jeans (similar)
4.  lightly distressed boyfriend jeans (same)

I think these four offer a true representation of what bottoms I might wear during a two week period.  It's amazing how changing the top, accessories and shoes can transform each item.

pink tee and skinny jeans

Today I'm starting with skinny jeans and a tee shirt because I think that's the most typical example of what I wear everyday.  This time I've added some pretty pink and orange earrings (similar), a pink and gold bracelet (similar) and gold watch (all from Kohls) and a cross necklace from Origami Owl.

skinny jeans and pink t-shirt

I found this pretty pink t-shirt at Kohls and I love the color.  It runs a little on the thin side so I am wearing a shaping tank top underneath to help hold everything in place.  Shaping tanks take a little getting used to but they are totally worth it.  When I was younger this was something I would have never thought about but now unless I want my jiggles exposed they are a fact of life.

My favorite tank for under t-shirts is by Sugar Lips.  Be warned that they are snug and a bit of a challenge to get on and off but they do what they are supposed to do, so it's a good trade off.

I love this floral cross body bag I found at Kohls last weekend.  It's the perfect size and the colors are great for summer plus it is a heavy faux leather and very easy to keep clean.  The sandals are Candies from last year and I found them at Kohls as well.

I have been blogging for a few years now and I want to let you know that the world of fashion blogging is much tougher than it seems.  First off taking pictures of yourself is tricky business.  If you're like me you have a preconceived idea of what you look like but then you step in front of a camera you're given a reality check real quick.  You have to learn which angle to face, which way to turn your head, what to do with your hands, when you're in need of a pedicure and how bad your farmers tan really is.  It's a science I tell you.  On the positive side it has made it easier to say no to dessert, ha, ha!

The whole idea of me offering fashion advice is so that real, ordinary women can feel inspired to up their style game.   And so here I am, farmers tan and all, taking more pictures of myself in the span of three months than I have in a lifetime.  Even though this is more work than I thought it would be, I'm having so much fun. I'm learning to stand up tall, to watch my posture, to take pride in how I take care of myself and what I present to the world.

With that being said, I want to be sure and share an encouraging thought with every fashion post so that none of us gets hung up on our outer beauty too much.  We as women are really good at comparing ourselves with other women even though no two of us are the same and not one of us is perfect.  I can guarantee even the most seemingly well proportioned, beautiful woman out there sees the flaws in herself.

Give yourself a break.  Learn to love yourself for the God given strengths you have and share those with the world.  While there's nothing wrong with putting your best self out there, the physical stuff takes a back seat to what's in your heart.

That's it for day one.  I hope you found this helpful and that you'll come back tomorrow to see what I'm styling for day two.

xo, Patty

  1. Patty, I'm so proud of you! You are showing how we really do all dress...well those of us not working outside the home. We want to look cute no matter our age or our work and this is perfect. The right jeans and a tshirt with cute accessories. ♥

  2. You look beautiful and I always appreciate your advice. I'm not sure I could ever get used to the shaper tank, mostly because I just get way too warm in two layers. I'm the lady wearing a tank top in the sanctuary in January, lol. I appreciate the accessories posts most of all, that is my weak spot. I have always been more of a "utility" dresser. jeans, black or grey tee, cardigan if it's cold. I have jewelry and I admire how other people accessorize, but doing it myself has always stumped me, and I'm an artist! Keep the advice coming, these are some of my favorite posts :)

  4. Once again, Patty you have made fashion for us over fifty (way over in my case) seem fun and easy. I have always loved to accessorize, but just get bogged down when it comes to buying any clothes. I did look at the shaping tank on Amazon, but worried because it said one size, so like Kathleen, might have to think about that one, but loved your post and you are as cute as can be. I promise to follow your series and step out of my comfort zone. My new white top from Amazon comes today so I'm excited about that.

  5. I think you are beautiful, from head to toe!!! I am a shorts wearing gal, and that poses a challenge, since my legs aren't what they used to be. I am opting for a longer short when going out, but I sill love my gym style shorts for house and yard work. Found the perfect shorts for this at Walmart! I am not a capri gal, but may have to get used to them, as I find jeans too constricting. Maybe if lost some weight, I wouldn't? Nah, I'm still not a jeans gal. I have a shapewear tank that I love too. I think it is Body by Ganz. I will have to check out Fish Lips. Funny name.
    Hugs,
    Kris

  6. Patty,
    You look amazing, dear friend!
I agree, it's hard to get a photo of what one thinks they look like
and how you actually look in front of the camera! (wink!)
I'm trying to show "Mr. Ed" how to use my camera to accentuate the positive sides of me! (wink!)
    I l o v e your Fashion Friday!
I learn something new and excitingly useful each week!
    Keep 'em comin'!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  7. Patty, I think I have a few things that can fit this style. Except, I do not wear shorts any longer.. I could wear those Bermuda styles. I often wear capris. I love that your sandals match the trim on the purse. I used to change up my purse so much...now I just use a dark one in winter or lighter one in warm months...but I do have special purses for occasions. Blessings, xoxo, Susie
