kitchen revamp - the afters

7/31/14

It's finally time to show you what I've been busy with all month long.  The reveal of my kitchen revamp.  I might as well warn you up front, there are a lot of pictures so buyer beware!

This is not the post where I tell you what I spent on what or the details of how I did this or that.  This is just my hard earned "tada" moment.  The rest will come later.

So you can see the transformation more clearly, I've included a before photo followed immediately by the after of the same area...

(before)
 (after)
Removing all the clutter helped so much...

(before)
(after)
The sink area feels much larger and accessible...

(before)
(after)
I really hated losing my large black clock but once the range hood went up, I was over it and then I found this vintage looking red replacement...in.love.

(before)
(after)
Hiding the back of the island with a piece of bead board really cleaned it up and tied the two islands together.

(before)
(after)
Moving the microwave to under the island left me room on the counter top for a really cute coffee bar...

(before)
(after)
Having a solid surface as the back splash really limits your wall display space.  I used cup hooks under the cabinets and a black chain to hang this cute chalkboard...

(before)
(after)
It is still hard to believe what a difference a coat of white paint makes.  I had almost forgotten until I looked at these pictures side by side...

(before)
(after)
Remember that awkward space I had between the fridge and the stove?  This little "cabinet" helps to bridge the two together and provides a place to rest my spoon...

I'll share the happy accident that helped put this together later...

Normally I would have been a little nervous showing you this reveal, wondering if you liked it or not.  But I was reminded while working on the kitchen that decorating is such an individual thing.  Sure, I worked hard and yes, I want you to like what I did but the important thing is that I like it.

The whole process has made me fall in love with my home all over again and I'm so excited for the possibilities that exist in the rest of the house.

I'll be sharing all the details over the next week or two, along with photos of the projects I have planned for August.  Thank you for all the kind and encouraging words, you have made me brave enough to tackle anything.

xo, Patty

  2. Patty,
    WoW!!!
    I love, LOVE, L O V E the transformation!!!
Amazing how light and bright your kitchen by painting the upper cabinets white!!!
The removal of the cabinet doors above the refrigerator is so~o~o enlightening!
The addition of glass and yellow in that space is gorgeous!!!
The small cabinet between the stove and refrigerator is priceless!!!
Here's an idea:... look for a salvage piece of granite for the top!
Love the cup hooks and chain to hang art work against your solid backsplash!!!
    Very creative solution!!!
I used metal or wrought iron easels against my tile backsplash!
I adore the photo of the sunflower over the stove!!!
Moving the shelf from above the door to above the range hood is stunning!!!
Love the addition of beadboard to your island cart!!!
I went from dark walnut cabinets in my Galley Style Kitchen to creamy white many years ago.
I've been toying with the idea of painting the lower cabinets another hue.
Not sure I'm ready for that leap; however, I'm lovin' the contrast with your red lower cabinets.
You are so~o~o inspiring with this kitchen make~over!!!
I'll be watching for further posts!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  3. Patty, are we twins separated at birth, lol?!! We now officially have the same kitchen, red lower cabinets, white uppers, open shelves . . . . ! Mine is way tinier though, do I ever envy those islands! I also just adore your scrolly shelf brackets, hmmm I'm wondering how hubby might feel if I ask him to replace our plain ones :) It's gorgeous, every inch! Love love love your kitchen.

  5. I really like it. It's so cottagey if that's a word. I too have storage problems in my kitchen at our campgrounds. I love how you bumped the two islands together I would have never thought of that. You gave me a great idea for a storage solution. Thank You.

  8. Nicely done, Patty!
It seems like not only is your kitchen brighter, and feels larger, but it seems like it will function for you better as well.
The addition of the range vent hood, the little cabinet to the side of the range... such welcome additions I'm sure.

It's nice that you are in love with your home again. Looking forward to seeing what other changes may be coming.

  9. Hi Patty! Your kitchen looks wonderful! I love the white but love that you kept some of the red cabinets. Your stove hood is very pretty and the little tiny cabinet is perfect between your stove and fridge! I'm happy for you and I know you love it.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  11. I love it! It is amazing just how much more light the upper cabinets bounce into the room now that they are white. When I redid my kitchen I found that the thing that made the biggest difference was getting rid of the clutter. Sure, everything looked fresh and so much better, but getting rid of the stuff on top of counters made me feel like I could breathe. I bet you felt that way too. The coffee bar area is adorable, and most importantly, it's an area you will use multiple times a day so it's worth the countertop real estate. Great job! Getting the kitchen freshened up makes all the time you spend there so much happier:>)

  13. My kitchen is like yours in the fact that I have ONE LONG WALL OF CABINETS and the rest is furniture I've added in to have a more functional kitchen. It's called "unfit kitchen" meaning the cabinets are not fit together. It's hodge podge. I finally have my kitchen the way I want it. When I moved here-- I had no stove. When I got a stove-- I had no counter or tables on either side of my stove. You have a bar. I didn't even have that. I have my uppers painted white and my lowers (of the built ins) painted black. It ties my black stainless steel refrigerator in with my vintage Chambers range.
I just recently covered my yellow walls with a creamy latte. Seeing your yellow walls-- makes me somewhat miss the yellow; even though I JUST PAINTED LAST WEEK! Still-- I'm just like you. Pleased with the little differences in the details. Also... I love bead board...don't you? It just made sense to put that piece on the back of your baking table. I used a piece after removing a lower door and drawer-- I was putting a table next to the stove for counter space anyway...so I removed them. It just made sense.
My point is-- you like how your kitchen looks and functions. It's your kitchen. It doesn't matter what others see or think--until they try to work in there and live in there they just won't know. I can tell you're happy with your kitchen.
It looks much lighter with the new paint on the cupboards...and so cheerful! I for one love your color scheme.
    love reading here.

  14. You nailed it! I love it, and I'm glad you kept some of the red. Life is boring without a little bit of red!
I love the way the light comes in thru the white Cotten curtains and makes the whole room feel fresh. Good job!!

  16. Patty.....first I have to say that I loved your kitchen the very first time I was in it. I felt so at home, and I loved the cottage charm your kitchen had. But reading over this post, not once, not twice, but three times, I can say that I love it even more!!! You have really outdone yourself on this revamp!! You and I both share a lot of the same "problems" if you will, with our kitchens. Lack of counter space being the first and most troublesome thing for me. You have found a way to utilize every inch of your space, and while making them more functional for you, you also managed to make it feel as though you had a professional redo too! I absolutely love the cabinets! Love the coffee bar! Love the new cabinet next to the stove!!!! And just plain love every single thing you did! Congratulations! You worked hard, and you achieved perfection!!!!!! I SO wish I could come right over to have some iced tea in your new space!!
PS On previous post, with cookies, and talk of the endless summer....I was just telling my Mom the same thing...I don't ever remember summers being so hot and sticky! We had dry heat. What happened? I just wilt! I think I may need to bake some cookies now!

Love the hidden microwave and the new coffee bar! Love the beautiful glass jars on the shelves. Shiny things transfer so much light around the room, don't you think? Oh, I'm so happy that you are in love with your "new" room! YAY! Thanks for sharing it with us! ~Sally
