It has been a bit of an emotional week as I've watched my mom move the last of her things out of the home she shared with my dad before he passed away and turn over the keys to the new owner. So I thought I was in need of a Friday morning light post.
Since I am in a nostalgic mood anyway...
I thought we could share our favorite childhood summertime memory. I think mine would be the days we spent swimming either in the public plunge or in my Aunt Betty's pool. We would throw coins in the water and see who could dive to the bottom and gather the most, we played Marco Polo, had underwater breath holding contests and races across the pool. I used to love looking down and seeing my hands all wrinkled like prunes (funny, I don't love it so much now that it doesn't take hours in the water to get the same affect).
Now it's your turn. What's your favorite summertime childhood memory?
xo, Patty
Such sweet memories, mine would be playing in our yard with my three younger brothers, running around and catching butterflies, lady bugs and bees! Hope your Mom feels settled in her place soon!
ReplyDeleteWe'd leave the house in the morning, come home for lunch, and then head out again. Not with my mother, not with an adult, but just me and my brother. We learned how to take the city bus, we'd ride our bikes all over, we staged neighborhood competitions. And this was in midtown Memphis, TN, not some idyllic country town.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute little vignette on your table! I guess mine would be playing with my cousin when she came to visit.

My 4 sisters and I snuggled up in the same bed under the blankets. Playing flashlight tag and giggling.
ReplyDeleteI remember playing hide-and-go-seek, going to the local outdoor pool, learning to ride a bike on one belonging to my friend's sister. As Starr mentioned, parental supervision didn't seem necessary, friends played together and came home at mealtimes! Things changed when we left that city, my hometown.
ReplyDeleteThis has been hard on you, I know. It does evoke a lot of memories too.
ReplyDeleteI loved hearing your recollection of summer swims. We dove for coins too, and played Marco Polo and chicken, and all that jazz. Good times. I have so many fond memories of my childhood. It was a wonderful time. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite. I do love all of our family vacation times up at the lake though. Such wonderful times!!!
XO Kris
No school and playing all day with my friends!
ReplyDeletei can see a cute card in the tray, plz give a big snap of that card.. i want to see..
ReplyDeleteIt would have to be all the kids on my country road built a fort in the trees down by the river. We spent hours just playing and make believe stories. Every summer we would have to rebuild but it was a special place for all of us and wonderful memories. And not one of us fell in the river!!
ReplyDeleteWe had a mobile home in Ballybunion in Co.Kerry, where we spent years of summer hols.
ReplyDeleteMy two sisters & my three brothers used to climb down a cliff through a wee cave then more climbing downwards to the most amazing beach where only a handful of local people would venture to pick perriwinkles from the rocks.
Went back recently & brought my girls down....so much fun :)

Ha ha, cute post about the diving for coins and wrinkles. I have so many summer memories, including riding out to the country on bicycles with girl friends and working on a raft made of branches and logs.
ReplyDeleteMine would be playing hide and go seek every night. This is not just your average hide and seek, we would cover a quarter of a city block; hiding. We would be running constantly! But we had to be home before the street lights came on. Hope you have a peaceful weekend. This is a new phase of you and your Mom's life.

ReplyDeletePlaying with my best friend who lived across the street who was 3.5 years older than me. We would pretend to be gymnasts as we did flips in the yard. :)
ReplyDeleteSummer in the mountains, eating fresh veggies at my uncles house and waking to the cool air.
ReplyDeleteI have just found your blog and I just wanted to tell you that it has really touched me. I would love to sit down with you and drink a cup of coffee and talk for hours!
ReplyDeleteNice post. Mine would be playing hide and seek right before dark, when the lightening bugs first come out. Scary but exciting when you are little.
ReplyDeleteso sad for your mum, its hard tosay good by to the home she shared with her loved one.Sounds like you had happy memories,I loved summer vaction Bible school that came to our rural town every summer, we met in the little hall and we all did crafts, (which I loved)!!!
ReplyDeleteOh- I am so sorry your Mom sold her home- I know it is distressing to see your parent(s) moving into the golden phase of their life.
ReplyDeleteI guess my favorite childhood memory is of spending time with my Aunts and cousins- going to the Falls that ran on my Uncle's property...having my Aunt Bessie make me colored butter sandwiches and making tents out of quilts over the clothesline in the yard. xo Diana
Probably high school and summers at the shore.Have a wonderful weekend..I'm about to put my home on the market too..Going to a retirement community..
ReplyDeletePatty, I am so sorry for the sad times you and your Momma are facing...life certainly has it's sad days! Thankful you have the Lord in your heart to make it bearable!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite summer memory?? I have soooo many from my childhood days of long summer days! My 5 siblings started early and ended when the street lights came on only stopping for lunch and dinner! My best friend and I had pretty pink and purple bikes riding for hours, jump rope marathons, four~square with all the neighborhood kids, and kickball too! She and I had our favorite tree we would climb and spend hours sitting high on the branches talking about our dreams....and secrets of the boy we wanted to marry! LOL! Ahhhh...the magic of childhood! I think that is why I love children so much...when you get down on their level, somehow the adult stuff kind of fades away! :D
I so love your blue chick on the dining table. I am such a rooster lover anyway. That was the first thing I noticed when I found your blog. BTW this is my first visit to your blog and I am loving it.Trish
ReplyDeleteSending prayers for strength during this time of change for you and your mom.
ReplyDeleteSo many memories of summers growing up in the 50s; playing kick the can, jumping rope, riding bicycles, catching fireflies in a jar. No computers, electronic games, television. Do kids today still know how to play?
I am sure it is difficult to witness the end of one phase in your Mom/your life and see the other one. I completely understand after losing both parents....
ReplyDeleteMy favorite summertime memory is going with my mother to visit her parents. Sleeping on a cot with freshly ironed sheets that smell like oil of olay...it wasnt but the scent was that! Then waking up and sitting curled up beside my Mom on the glider under the covered porch listening to my Mom and Grandmother's morning conversation over coffee. Then the wonderful southern breakfast of melon, sliced tomato, toast, scrambled egg and bacon..... thank you for letting me relive that special time! Have a wonderful weekend Patty.
So many childhood memories, planting seeds and watering all the rows of vegetables in the garden, making play houses under the sheets drying on the clothes line, gathering huge bouquets of flowers from garden of the two elderly sisters around the corner, going to work with my daddy at the dairy and playing with the kittens in the haystacks...too many.... thanks for taking me back today to the innocent days of childhood... innocent
ReplyDeleteMy favorite memory is running outside when it rained just to cool off and feeling the raindrops hit our face and soak us all up and cool us down...and have a cool night of sleep we had no fans or air conditioning...hot days but good days!!!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favourite childhood memories was watching and listening to thunder storms with my mum, we would make hot chocolate and count the time between the flashes of lighting and the thunder. Such a special time!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your memory with us :)
Jerra xx
One of my favorite childhood memories is the sound of the ice-cream truck coming by the house (with soft-serve lemon ice-cream cones). Never tasted anything so good.
ReplyDeleteChildhood memories is one of the best thing happens. I remember spending it with my cousins that we've never seen for quite a while. It's like a family reunion.Every one had a great and memorable time.

Hi Patty...
ReplyDeleteeasy to understand your emotions after a week as you've had.
A fresh start will be nice for your mom... new memories and new activities to help her through this time.
My mom did the same thing.
Love your summer stories!
My favorite summer activity as a kid, was all six of us kids loaded into the station wagon, and pulling the trailer to Yellowstone to stay for the summer. Great times!

Luckily, your mom can take all the memories with her from the house. :)
ReplyDeleteI remember building hugs towns in our stone driveway with my brothers. We would carve curvy roads out and make hills with pile of stones for our matchbox cars to drive on and over. We used wood blocks as houses and had driveways for each house. We would pick small branches off a bush and stick them into the ground as trees. We would spend hours playing in our town until we had to come in. I remember once even making a lake using saran wrap to line a hole and filling it with water! My mom was not too happy about that...lol.
Hugs, Angie
Lovely picture!
ReplyDeleteMine would be visiting my grandparents. Both lived in WV, abour 8 and 10 hours away from our home in MD, so we only saw them once a year. The first week would be at one set of grandparents' home, the second at the other grandparents'.
