nooks and crannies in the garden

6/6/12

Good morning.  I have to tell you, I wasn't so sure how good it was going to be when I first got going.  If you are like me, your mornings are sort of on automatic pilot.  I roll out of bed...hit the restroom...then head for the kitchen to start the coffee...while the coffee is brewing I do a quick check of my emails.  This morning was no different except when I went to pour my first cup of coffee there was only hot water.  It seems I forgot to put the coffee in the filter before I pressed on.  I am sure none of you has ever done anything like that, right?

I've mentioned before that we live in an older neighborhood with many mature trees.  I love the charm and shade that they provide but their large bulging roots can be a pain to garden around.  I have had some success with low growing annuals like alyssum and lobelia but wanted a little height to show off the beautiful trunks of the trees.

This Spring I took this little wooden wagon plant stand from the porch and tucked it in as close to the trunk as possible.  Then I surrounded it with pots that I had scattered on the back patio.  I love how it turned out.  If gives me a pop of color I can change out seasonally, and the added height that I wanted as well.

One of my favorite things about cottage gardens are the little added touches of whimsy that make them unique. Anything from old ceramic plates to pretty little fairies add so much charm to your yard.  I know you've heard it before but think of your garden as a series of rooms.  In doing so, it not only looks fun and inviting but it is less daunting to create one vignette at a time than an entire garden space.

I am off to my mom's for a couple of days of sewing and time together.  I will be back tomorrow with the next installment of our housekeeping series on the topic of pantries.

Have a wonderful Wednesday.

xo, Patty

But I have on occasion, forgotten to put the coffee or the water in!!!! Have a good time sewing with Mom. How is she doing?

  5. Your garden is beautiful!! I love the way you incorporate the little signs and things in your flowers. I also think that sweet, little charms around the yard adds a sense of love. :)

(I also have mature trees in our new place, so you're giving me some ideas.)

  6. Patty, you are managing in the root filled space so beautifully. We have that issue under our tall pine trees. I love your whimsy. I just placed a large white bunny in the front yard and CC finds him sinister which I find amusing. hugs, olive

  9. Your gardens are beautiful. I live in one of those older neighborhoods with lots of trees.....spruce and pine trees.....it used to be a Christmas tree farm. Not good for gardening. ANd I forgot to mention .....lots of deer.

  10. Hi Patty!

I always love your gorgeous garden photos and all the bright colors! And that is such a good idea to place the garden pots around the tree for extra height! Those tree roots can be hard to garden around for sure! :) And I chuckled at your morning coffee story! I have one of those stories, too...actually more than one! So no, it's not just you! :)

I hope you have a wonderful time with your mom, sewing and spending time together! :)

    Blessings,
    Jenni

  13. I love these peeks at your garden. The pottery mushrooms are fun. I saw some Sunday at a garden display. They were cute and they're one of the items I would love to have purchased, and now wish I had.

  15. Patty. I love what you have done around your trees. I have 2 big trees in my front yard that I need to do something around. I am on the lookout for interesting things to use there.

  16. It looks great, Patty! I have one old tree in my back yard. It has massive roots. I won't even be able to put a privacy fence over there. No way to go around the roots.

  23. Does Lobelia stay all year. I have tried to grow some many times and they always die out. And for the coffee...I've had trouble thinking about sugar and cream. One morning I just looked at them both and thought...what am I doing. I say I was still asleep. Have fun with your mom.

  24. What a great idea! I love how it layers everything up there. What wonderful old trees you have there, too.

Your morning routine is identical to my own...except I may walk to the bathroom faster!;>) And, even worse than not putting the coffee in-did you ever forget to replace the basket before hitting start? NOT pretty! xo Diana
