grandma's house

2/5/12

I have such vivid memories of my grandmother's house.  The lively conversation and yummy aroma's can be conjured up without much hesitation.  I remember she made the best homemade tortillas.  All of us kids would literally wait in line as she carefully flipped each one on the grill and then slathered them with butter before handing one to each of us as we eagerly waited our turn.  I remember the TV was always on in the background with her novellas (Spanish soap operas) and while I didn't understand the words, I could recognize the passion and drama well enough.

I'm feeling a little melancholy today as I come to terms with my grandson's recent move out of our home into his new home over two hours away.  He has lived here since his birth nearly four years ago and the emptiness is just about to swallow me up.

While my head knew this was inevitable my heart is taking it's sweet time getting on board with the change.  I am so thankful that God blessed us with this special time...

Everything has a season...being a mom is an adventure, being a full time mom-mom was amazing but now it's time to just be grandma to my two adorable little munchkins and what a wonderful blessing that will be, too.

In transition...Patty

  2. What a beautiful post. I know those transitions are difficult. I am on the brink of one myself. Your grandchildren are so lucky! My own children do not have grandparents, and it makes me so sad, especially since I was so close to all FOUR of mine. Your home is beautiful. Can't wait to browse. I am now a follower. Hope you'll stop by my blog, too.

  3. That's really hard. Our grandchildren stayed with us for 3 weeks about two years ago, and it was so hard to see them leave, especially to a not that great situation.

  4. Sorry to hear about your new transition. I'm sure that is going to be hard for you :( But at least it isn't too far away that they will still be able to visit every once in a while!! It's always a difficult time when someone who has always been there- leaves. It feels empty without them there!! Hopefully the transition will be easy for you :) have a wonderful Sunday Patty!!

  8. Patty, heart and prayers are with you. That time will be special for him, too. My younger cousin lived with my grandmother -- we had a two-family house and we were upstairs -- for a year and fifty years later I feel a special closeness to her.

  9. Patty,
Two hours sounds like a "day trip" in the near future, to me! I am so~o~o glad we made the move here on this side of the Prairie ten years ago, as we are now only a 5 minute drive from our son and daughter~in~law! (Before the move it was 3 1/2 hours one way!)Thoughts are coming your way as you find a peace for your grandson's absence!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  10. That was very brave of you to share. Just think of all the women you will help by letting them they are not the only ones. Bless you.

  13. Thank you for visiting my blog, Zetta's Aprons...I liked hearing about your memories of your grandmother making torillas. The memories of my grandmothers are what inspires me to create memories for my 8 granddaughters. I will be following your blog from now on. =D

  16. Patty,
I, too, have memories of my grandma making home made tortillas and keeping them warm in a basket. We kids, would run in, grab one and put a thin layer of hot sauce on it, then run out and play! That's where I learned to love hot salsa!
Our first grandson lived with us since his birth until he was almost a year old before he and his parents moved into their own place. Even though they lived only 40 minutes away, I cried every single day! Now he's 19 years old and I still cry because I don't see him very much. He's busy living his life, working, hanging out with friends, school, etc. He called us last night and I cried for an hour afterward, praying for him and for God's guidance on his life.
Hang in there! All we can do is entrust them to God and Who better to take care of them?
    I'll pray for you today.
    BTW, I love your home!

  19. Oh I so feel for you !!! I still have a special bond with our oldest granddaughter and just this summer we had to move across the state from them! I don't care if she is 17 (and her sister is 14!) I MISS them, but knew it was God's will for us to be here...doesn't mean this nana wasn't lonely for grandkids and kids though! :)
Congratulations on the retirement. I believe you will LOVE every moment!

  20. I'm sorry that your grandson moved away, but I'm glad he's close enough that you'll still be able to visit often. I know it won't be the same though, so I hope all of you including him adapt to these changes quickly. Maybe you and his parents could each get a web cam so you can still "visit" each other every day at least. You are all very lucky to love each other this much.

Thanks for your visit on my blog yesterday. I appreciate you stopping by.

  21. So many heartfelt comments, Patty.
I share all those sentiments, and know it is not an easy time for you. My heart holds many loving thoughts for you and of course will continue the prayers. I loved your memories of your Grandma's house and know your grandson will have loving memories of your home.
Your pictures of your homes say much about the warmth and love that abide there.

  22. I have special memories of being at my grandmother's house. Oh how I loved it.
I can only imagine how empty your home seems now. I think that when he comes to visit, the time with him will be more precious and the things you do together will be sweeter.

  24. Hi Patty,

I can feel the melancholy feelings through your post. This must be very hard for you both--four years is a long time. The heart does take time to adjust, doesn't it? He will always carry this time with him and someday he'll talk about his memories of his grandmother's house! I discovered your blog through Shirley at Zetta's Aprons and just joined you as a follower. I'm looking forward to reading more!

  26. Patty, I am sorry your daughter and grandson moved away. Two hours away isn't too far so you will be able to visit often. Cherish the memories of the time he spent with you.

  27. Life transitions are hard. Our daughter is in her last two years of college and I'm worrying about being on the brink of an empty nest already :)
