camellias blooming

2/2/12

I made it out to the garden yesterday and actually got a start on the garden clean up. I was able to fill one can of green waste before the truck came and even though I barely made a dent, it looks better than it did before.

Just as a reward for my (semi) hard work, I had the added bonus of these beautiful blooming camellias nearby.  February is the peak time for them in Southern California.

Camellias are a great shrub if they are hardy where you are.  Even though they only bloom once a year, they will usually continue blooming for the entire month of February and most of March and they have the most gorgeous glossy green leaves the rest of the year.

I don't know why I don't plant more of them.  I think I'll put them on my list of wants for the garden.

Whether they are on the bush or floating in a pretty dish, camellias are definitely one of late winters greatest little jewels.

Enjoy what's left of your day,  Patty

  1. Your flowers are gorgeous! I'm in southern Delaware which is usually very cold in the winter - and my camellias are in bloom already. I've got pretty red ones - and they usually don't come out tell the end of February beginning of March. Its been in the 50's and 60's lately. Hope we don't have a snow storm to burn their tips! Enjoy

  2. The only flower blooming in my garden are my primroses. I'm sure the next freeze will get them but for now I'm enjoying. I love your camellias and I agree I need to add that to my want list for this year.

  4. The camellias are beautiful. We have daffodils blooming here in Tennessee -- about a month early -- with a California-ish 70 degrees for the past few days.

I'm green with envy right now.. as we just had a dusting of fresh snow.
No gardening for us for a while.

Thanks for sharing your garden with us :)

  6. Alright, I am clearly living in the wrong state! All you people who have flowers blooming. In mid winter! I am so envious! I don't think camellias would even grow here in Michigan.

  8. The deer think my camillias are delicious. Consequently I have just camillia sticks with a few green leaves here and there. Granted they are located in an unfenced part of the property, but they (the deer) jump fences at will. I will just have to admire yours this year...sob. wink wink. They are beautiful.

  9. It's far too early for flowers in Ontario so I will have to be satisfied with looking at your lovely camellias! ~ Maureen

  16. I grew up in Long Beach and my Mom loved Camellias. They lined the fences. Your red ones remind me of an azelia I had at one of our homes here. It bloomed around Christmas. Hmmmm guess I am going Camellia shopping soon. As always, you inspire me.
