inspiration and reality

12/3/13

A train runs directly behind our little cottage.  I am talking a full blown cargo carrying freight train complete with earsplitting horns and the clickety clack of train wheels rolling along the track.

I felt the need to share this bit of knowledge with you because sometimes I think blog land can create a sort of bubble of perceived perfection that does not line up with reality at all, especially this time of year as the annual parade of holiday homes begins.

I am all about inspiration and love nothing more than to fritter away time looking at beautiful pictures on pinterest, blogs and in magazines but if I'm not careful I can come away feeling more defeated than inspired.  I don't want that ever to be the case if you visit here.

The reality of it is that on most days you will find dirty dishes in the sink, stacks of papers and toys waiting to be put away and more projects started than I will ever have time to complete.

I love to decorate for the holidays and can't wait to share what I'm doing with you.  I just want to make sure that you understand that what I share is only a cropped out snapshot of my life.  It has always been my belief that there is enough messiness in the world and I want this blog to focus on the pretty and the positive.

So with that disclaimer on the books, welcome to December.  I can't wait to show you what I've been up to.

xo, Patty

  1. We do all have clutter and some blogs just look so perfect. But like you, I try not to show it! ;) I love your photos and you're a great photographer too.
    Be a sweetie,

  2. Well said Patty! It's so easy to compare and forget we only see the most idealized photos most of the time. I love you for your transparency as well as your faith and creativity!

  4. Good morning, there isn't a thing you said that doesn't apply to me. Everything's a mess from the unfinished painting project, and life in general. I've yet to get my craft/office/dumping room straightened up since we moved the Hoosier hutch to the downstairs. Every thing from the hutch that was in my office is piled on top of other unfinished project piles... oh goodness what a mess. Our company left Sunday. Yesterday was my laundry day and I actually finished about a month's worth of ironing. Sheesh. Of course I'm not going to show photos of the mess... ha!
We live close enough to hear the train passing by. I actually like hearing them. We can also hear traffic on I~5 ,
but it's not disruptive. Some days when it's too quiet and lonely, just hearing the sounds of other people heading to their destination is a reminder that there is life out there and places to explore.

Enjoy this day. Take care, Patricia

  6. I lived with a train going thur our town for about 45 years and I do still like to hear that whistle. Where I live now a train runs down over the hill and I can hear it especially in the warmer weather, here in Pa. it's a way of life.
Looking at the pictures on the internet can be so much fun but I guess you have to remember that it is not the perfect life!

  7. Patty, so true. I too have dishes in the sink. No toys to put away since my daughter has flown a full year now, but I do have sock to pick up, hmmmm could be hubby's. laundry to do and a host of other chores. Life is what it is. I love life, even when I have to pick up socks ;-)

  8. So true and every year is different for folks. Some years you are really into it and others you just get what you can done and make is sparkly for the kids. That's my philosophy anyway.

  10. Yes, indeed. We do well to remember that not all is perfect behind the beautiful photos. But it's a lovely getaway and often very inspirational.

  11. I pretty much always have dishes soaking in the suds. And my clothes hamper is my washing machine, which is in an open linen closet in my hall. And right now, after having dragged boxes from hither and yon, it looks like a tornado went through here.

  14. You are so wise Patty!
Thank goodness! I feel exactly the same way.
In fact I was thinking about doing a post on a different kind of creativity during the holidays-
specifically facing life's challenges with a smile and gratitude.

    Love to you-

  15. Patty,
I'm chuckling (not at you, but with you) because as I was doing a photo shoot session,
in the background set the vaccum, the laundry room door was open with baskets of laundry waiting to be done
and a used frying pan set on the stovetop. . .welcome to the Land of Blog!!!
I want to thank you for your sweet comments and continued blog friendship!!!
    You,dear friend,light up my life!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  18. I love your philosophy! I used to let all the perfectness in blogland bother me but I am learning that we only put our best faces out there. Alot like high school we fear being judged. Glad you put it into words for us. Love your pitchers!

  19. Hi Patty,
You sound like a perfectly normal woman, that is how my house is at times, and I don't have children running around my house. But, once my new job starts, it will be like that all of the time.
You have a lovely home. And you decorate it beautifully.
    Hugs, cindy

  20. Looking at all the pretty pictures, it can be easy to get caught up in the perfection of it all. Good reminder that there are always "two sides" to the story. Can't wait to see what you have done...pretty

  21. Thank you for your window of "real", ha! I will admit, that it's very easy for me not to talk about and show my less than perfect self on my blog, but oh how not-perfect is my home, too!! We currently have a laundry list of fixers for our house right now... Life! I
I always have enjoyed your blog, and I know I've yet to respond, but your thoughtful email really means a lot to me!!! It's a huge support knowing you and others have adopted and understand:)
    Have a Merry Christmas!
