a peek at my living room

11/20/13

When we moved into our little cottage six years ago I knew instantly that I was home.  It was built in 1954 and has all the odd quirks and frustrations that living in an older house has.  It also has all the charm.

And in the case of the living room, that means large multi framed windows and plenty of natural light.

The old brick fireplace was already painted white when we moved in and I love it.  I used to long for a more substantial mantel but now I think the one it has suits the scale of the room perfectly.

The room itself is long and narrow with the fireplace in the center and kind of lends itself to two distinct areas, a television watching side and a reading/conversation side.

We have had the large leather furniture for over ten years.  I have dreamed of a white slip covered sofa for quite a while but I have to admit that these have been very forgiving in a room that is in constant use.

The over sized plaid chair was a gift from my sister in law and is my favorite place to curl up with a magazine or good book.  The white bookcase was part of a furniture trade I made with my mom. (I think I got the better end of the deal but don't tell her.)

The gallery wall above the sofa is a keeper.  I have room to keep adding and tweaking what's up there and really love the look.  I will share a few things I learned in creating it with you soon.

The corner next to the TV holds my houseplants as well as a small collection of DVDs in the basket tucked underneath.  The stand that holds the television is actually an outdoor bench that my husband converted for me a few years ago.

All in all, I love this room.  It serves it's purpose well and truly is a family room.  I have often heard that small homes grow close families and this room can testify to the truth of that.

  1. Your home looks warm and comforting and beautiful! I love the colors you used and your gallery wall. The wall above my sofa is quite empty, I can't decide what to put there!

  2. The quote about small homes is one of my favorites and I whole heartedly believe it. I think this room is completely charming and I really love all of the yellow. So happy! I really need to get off my duff and see to the gallery wall I want to do but I'm pretty sure it's going to wait until after the holidays at this point.

  8. I love the charm and sunniness of your living room. Those windows give such character to a room all by themselves. It looks like a room you could totally relax and enjoy. That is the best look a living room can have!

  21. Such a lovely home you have! Love all of your artistic touches! We have been leasing this old 1933 craftsman since we've been in Kirkland and love it so much! The older homes have so much charm! We keep hoping the owners might want to sell one day. :-)
