White.
I still love color but I find myself leaning more toward a colorful, bohemian cottage style and I think I need a white canvas as a background to pull it off.
So, am I that brave?
To forgo color on the walls when I fought my husband so hard to put color on the walls so many years ago.
To mix colors and patterns with restrained abandon?
To cut into my gorgeous vintage sheet collection?
To follow my heart?

Bravest thing - painting my dining room lavender which friends and family tried to discourage but I love it more every day. In fact, purple in all its shades and tones has become my favourite colour.

Painting with bright colors, I was a "Benjamin Moore Linen White" kind of girl for most of my adult life; growing up, every room was wallpapered in the home. I painted my bedroom lavender but I regret the shade. It has too much grey in it. :( Almost impossible to find matching bedspread, etc. You cannot go wrong with white and accessorize to your hearts content. xo
ReplyDeleteI am a total color girl, but I find myself painting some of my furniture white to let the color pop against it.
ReplyDeleteMy house is so tiny, that I have all the walls the same "provence yellow". It gives a good background for the color in my furniture, pillows, etc.

Several years ago I painted our kitchen Orange. I liked it, but it didn't go with the rest of my house at. all.!!! My hubby walked in that night and said Oh, I feel like I'm at Chi Chi's! The next day I painted it Red...it stayed that way until last year. Not bad!

My family is still reeling that, for the first time on 30+ years, I have painted nearly every room white (and I'm eyeing the office which is still yellow, a color I chose on a very bad day and have regretted almost the entire time) I have so many colorful furnishings that I am calming the house with whites so some of the accesories pop. It is like a breath of fresh air in our little house. Who knows, I may paint them a color again, but for now I'm enjoying a bit of serenity.
ReplyDeleteI say go for white. I am naturally drawn to color, but lately I have been wanting to have more neutral walls as well. And I am also in the awkward position of trying to talk my husband into it, after talking him into color everywhere years ago. ;/ lol He wants me to paint our living room red, from the green it is now. I have been putting it off for months!!! And he just isn't letting go of that red. uggh I would love a grey/blue. Not too dark. Something everything will go with. I have lots of colorful pillows and accessories and I'd like them to pop more. Be brave. After all, it's only paint. ;)
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking the same thing, Patty. For some odd reason I want to paint my kitchen white. This is very strange for me for I am always bold with color. I guess we're going through a new phase of life or something. Sending prayers for your brother. Your blog always lifts my spirits :)

ReplyDeleteYour fabric is very pretty, I strayed once from my norm with fabric choices and it lasted about 3 months and I could wait to get rid of it. Luckily it was only pillow covers, so no to much lost.
ReplyDeletei like the idea of white because you can change up the pillows, curtains & other items to dress it up or down depending on what you wish for ... such fun!! i guess ours is sort of a creamy white ... i love it. easy to clean if you get a mishap. ( :
ReplyDeleteI did do something last year that I had wanted to do for the past 20 years and that was to paint the dark wood wall around my fireplace and built in bookcase a cottage creamy white! I was so scared to do it! But I LOVE it...no regrets! :) do it...you'll love it! :)

Patty, I'm not very good with taking bold chances with decorating. The boldest thing I've done was to paint the wall at the end of my hallway a deep red. And I'm glad I did because I absolutely love it! Remember - you can always change something (paint color, material) if you don't like it.

I think it is a lovely idea Patty. I am totally in love with colours, but have wallpapered my entire downstairs white. The reason being that it allows me to play with colours as l please. I have a white canvas background and l mix all sorts of colours to a company it, anything and everything goes, both colours and patterns without it feeling stressful in any way. The boldest thing l have ever done? Painted my passage bright turqoise once, and bought the paint unseen in Denmark. Wow was that a bright tuqouise :-)! Blessings, Pam x

ReplyDeleteAfter twenty years of white walls during our Navy years, I have a hard time committing to color. Our home here has white walls, and so did our previous home. I think we're both struggling with the same issue but on opposite sides of the fence. Take care.

Today, I painted the posterboard background on my artwork for the area
and the frames. I just knew it would ruin the posterboard...but it didn't!!!
I don't have them back in the frames yet, but already it is a HUGE improvement!!!
A precious friend once told me... it's only paint...you can always change it...and it doesn't cost "an arm and a leg"!!! Pretty good advice.
I'd say "Follow Your Heart"!!!

I loved reading this post because I have been going through the same process myself! Feeling like I'm finally ready to go ahead and trust my instincts and go with what I love and not second guess myself and my tastes all the time. And oh, cutting into fabric!! So scary. ReplyDeleteI am a late responder but I just had to anyway. The bravest decorating decision I ever made was to paint my ceilings. I liked it right at first but I did get tired of it pretty quickly. I don't regret it though. I am actually thinking about painting my walls white - I'm doing pastels right now - blues and greens. But I'm not ready to change just yet.
