LOVING OUR HOMES - Cottage Style

8/7/17

I've been on a renewed mission to learn to love my home again.  I seem to go through spurts where I dream of selling our house and everything in it and searching for our  perfect "dream home".  But then reality (with all it's budgets, work locations and the physical labor of packing up our current place) sets in and I start to think of ways I can make changes to have this home a place I truly love being.

I will usually start out making a list of what I'd like to have and then I'll walk through each room in
the house making mental notes of what needs to be done.  What big and small changes can I make that will help me to love our little cottage again?

Sometimes all it takes is a little editing, taking down what I don't truly love and purging areas that have become cluttered.  That's the case with the kitchen and dining room.  I need to pull down the kitchen curtains and run them through the washing machine,  clear off our open shelving, only putting back what is truly beautiful and useful, and find the perfect accessories for the small entry table in the dining room.

The living room is in need of a decluttering session as well and maybe a couple of new throw pillows.  Not much but enough to make it feel fresh and inviting.

On the big things list are the stairs leading to the second floor.  They have needed either sanding or painting since 2011...no kidding, 2011.

That's just a portion of what needs to be done around here.  I won't bore you with the rest.  What about you?  What's in need of a little TLC where you live?  What could you do to make you love your home more?  Or is it already the place of your dreams?

I posted a few pictures of our dining room hutch here if you'd like to take a look.

I'd love to have you join me over on YouTube where I share more of my cottage style in the home and garden.  Here's the link, Lemon Lane Cottage.

  1. Patty, I need to organize more. I have gotten lax about sorting and boy it doesn't take long before it truly starts to show. I have containers of things in this office that need to be donated or stores. I sure could use some new throws and pillows too. My husband needs a new recliner...but I would have to secretly replace this one and just hope he never noticed. LOL.He loves that chair and I almost hate it. I usually drape a throw over the back to change it. LOL. Blessings for a great new week there. xcxo, Susie

  2. Good morning! I enjoyed visiting with you this morning! I also love color and tried to be more like the homes I saw on blogs and Pinterest, but the gray and neutral and farmhouse trend never made me happy. I don't engage in any social media, however, I do follow several blogs and get on Pinterest sometimes but looking at the "perfection" on most will leave you feeling inadequate and behind if you let it. That is why I love you and your blog.....you have never tried to "keep up with the Joneses" and I find that very refreshing and authentic. I love the coziness of your home and all the color. You mentioned the show Home Town....I absolutely LOVE that show and the host and hostess! In answer to your question, my dream home would be a place where my family and friends could be comfortable, feel welcome, and enjoy. I think that matters more than any decorating theme, trend, or how much money you spend.

  3. Your home is so bright and cheery! I have Pioneer Woman plates hanging in my dining area too. They are so pretty, perky and classic. Thanks for sharing. :)

  4. I'm ready for another decluttering session with my house, too. I really like it, but after awhile, I feel the walls closing in on my, from the piles I've accumulated. It's hard for me to sit and go through those piles, but that is what I need to do.

  5. I'm in purge mode right now. I realized I have hung on to a lot of old décor that I no longer love, my style has changed and it's time to clear out and update. That always makes me love my home more. Your home is beautiful. I think we tend to focus on the flaws in our own homes, but other people see the best!
