The porch is finally finished and ready for company. Before I give you the grand tour and show more pictures than you probably care to see, you need to know that our front porch is nothing grand but merely a four by eight foot slab of concrete that runs along the front of our house.
Even though it's still a bit chilly, my grandson and I bundled up under a quilt and have already taken it for a test drive and it runs just fine.
We've discovered we can hear the church bells in the late afternoon and can even count the chimes if we are quiet enough and sit really still. We've talked about the best and worst of the school year and hashed out our plans for the summer. We've planned porch parties and games of hide and seek. We've counted cars going by and waved hello to strangers.
But mostly we've just been together, no electronics to distract us, just the sound of the birds in the trees, the laughter of the neighborhood kids and the whir of the sprinklers in the distance to keep us company.
If I had my dream porch it would be a great big wrap around one with white posts and rails. There would be room enough for a swing and even a daybed for napping as well as plenty of rocking chairs and a small table for playing checkers or strumming the guitar. But short of winning the lottery, my little space out front will do just fine.
You see a porches size and even decor is not what's important. What matters is the sense of community and the feeling of belonging to a neighborhood that being out front provides.
xo, Patty

Your little porch is beautiful. Sounds like you have already made some good memories. I have lots of good ones from days gone by. When we stop to enjoy life like that it is priceless. Love your string of Edison lights. I hung a string of those on my back porch. Just enough light for the evening glow! Have fun out there and thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteVery nice and welcoming!
ReplyDeleteYour porch looks very nice, Patty. I'll bet you and your family will enjoy quiet times in the rocking chairs on the porch. So relaxing!
ReplyDeletePatty, You described my dream porch too. We had the same size you have and we just built a deck porch over that area...the only things is, only 4x8 is covered over head... One day maybe we can put a roof over it all. But I can say, I love your sweet porch. I love that you hear the birds and bells of the church. That you wave to strangers passing by...I do too. :):) Bless you honey, xoxo,Susie

I LOVE your yellow porch sign!
ReplyDeleteThat is just the sweetest little porch, Patty! I love how bright it is and how welcoming. I also like that it has some bushes close that give it a bit of privacy, too. A perfect little place to sit a spell! xo Diana

I love your space. I have never thought of painting terra cotta planters before. I have some stored away. Betcha it won't be long before I have mine painted some bright, beautiful colors. :-) My favorite thing on your porch is the mailbox. Don't ask me why? (Our mailbox is at the end of the driveway for the mailman to drive by and deposit the mail.) Thanks for the shopping list at the end of the post. You have inspired me to get out there and get busy.
ReplyDeleteHave a great summer!

Rocking chairs and a front porch and you and a grand child, that is the height of enjoyment. Your porch looks pretty and welcoming; I would like to have a front porch.
ReplyDeleteWhat more could you ask for? To have a grandchild enjoy it with you is a bonus!!

Hi Patty, It is not want you have, but what you do with what you have that counts. You have turn your little space into an inviting and relaxing haven. In today's busy noisy world, it is wonderful to have a restful place and a place to greet neighbors as they pass by. Knowing your neighbors and sharing a smile and a friendly greeting is something that is missing in much of your world today. Something that simple can change a neighborhood and a community:)
ReplyDeleteYour porch is absolutely perfect!
