Happy Monday everyone. Welcome to my Anniversary week celebration. I can't believe I've been posting here at Lemon Lane Cottage for a year now. Where did the time go? As a thank you for following my random thoughts and photos over the last year I thought it would be fun to do a whole week of give aways.
Instead of one big give away, I thought I'd pick one winner from each days comments and the gift would be whatever I am posting about that day. Does that make sense? I won't pick the winners until next week so that gives you the whole week to leave a comment on one or all of this weeks posts. Clear as mud?
With my Etsy shop opening on June 1st, I thought I 'd start the week out with this adorable Spring dress that will be going into my shop. All of my dresses are made from quality quilters fabric and embellished with removable details like this yo-yo pin. All seams have been professionally finished. This one is a toddler's size 3-4 but I can make one up for the winner in any size from 12 months to little girl's size six.
I know I've shared before that my mom made all of my dresses as a little girl and I always wished for store bought clothes. Do you remember the old Sears catalog? I would spend hours looking through the dresses, choosing my favorites and dog earring the pages. Did you do that, too?
Where was your favorite store to shop (or dream) for little girls clothes, either for yourself or for your daughters? Was it Sears, JCPenneys, Mervyns or some where else?

That is a beautiful dress. Yes, I, too, pored over the Sears catalog. I still remember that I could get 3 new dresses for $10 at the beginning of the school year. What I can't remember is what I had to wear the other 2 school days?

ReplyDeleteMy Mom and Dad would go every year to Buffalo shopping for us 5 kids for new clothes for school. It was so much cheaper there then here.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite dresses for my little girl when she was young were the hand knit dresses a high school neighbor girl made for her. One was white with a light blue smock look . . . Treasures they were . . . as were the many dresses my mom made for her. Thanks for the memories . . .
OMGosh do i ever remember going through the catalog and picking out my dresses. My dresses were also home made. My 8th grade graduation I wanted a store bought just light the girls in my class. One problem, I only wore a size 12 in little girls. I'll never forget the discovery of a store call Five and Nine. They had grown up adults clothes in 00. What happen to me now, LOL!!

My Mama always wore handmade clothing as a child and vowed to always have me in store bought clothing. I was a sad sight in the worn-out store-bought hand-me-downs. I was always pining over handmade.

ReplyDeleteI used to cut the child models out of the Sears catalog and make paperdoll clothes for them. Probably these days there is an "app" for that.
I loved ALL things Laura Ashley...so much so that I got a job there!!! I would use my earnings at the "Mother and Child" shop to get matching dresses for Meghan and I. I still have many of them and hope I can pass them on to our Granddaugther Clare.
ReplyDeleteOh Patty - you are so sweet. I used to love homemade clothes but with 6 and me the last one - I didn't get much that was homemade. Usually hand-me-downs from 3 sisters or new clothes from Sears or Eatons (our 2 major dept stores). I would love to win one of your dresses for my great-niece who is just turning one. J

ReplyDeleteAs a young lady I remember shopping Sears. We had a department store in the nearest city to me called Bacons. That was where my mother would always take me for Easter dresses. If it wasn't those 2 stores it was JCPenny, Walmart or good ol' Kmart. Oh how I miss those days!
we lived out in the country & mom made most all our clothes, but she would once a year order from the spiegel catalog! when my daughter was little i made all her dresses too!!! so nice to carry on a tradition--even tho at the time i despised those homemade clothes when i was younger!!!!

ReplyDeleteI remember, when I was a little girl, my parents would order clothing for my younger sister and me from the Spiegel catalog. We had several matching dresses through the years. As I grew older, nearing my teenage years, we shopped at Sears for clothes.

The dress is darling...I remember all those catalogs and the great prices back then..My sister and I were always dressed in pinafores or dresses with smocking ..still my favorite..

I LOVE THE DRESS! My mother made all of my clothes, too, and she was no fashionista. I always wanted to have store-bought clothes, too. I, like you, examined the Sears catalog until it was in tatters...and the same thing at Christmas with their Dream (or was it Wish) book. xo Diana

What a pretty party dress! My Mom also sewed all of our clothes...and I wore a uniform to school...she even made those. She would make each of the 3 of us the same dress in different colors!I remeber picking "things" from the Sears catalog...we'd pour through those pages...each picking out our favorite on every page. My first store bought clothes was from Hinshaws...sadly it is no longer around! Have a great day!!

ReplyDeleteJust as you mentioned, I preferred bought dresses to the array of dresses hanging in my closet all made by my mom. I must have hurt her feelings and later realized how much nicer her creations were to any others.
Both Sears and JC Penny...they were the only catalogs we ever saw!

This would be so sweet on my granddaughter -- she's almost four but only wears a size two right now as she was a micro-premie -- 1 lb, 8 oz at birth but healthy and growing!
ReplyDeleteA special "aunt" made some of my clothes when I was young and I guess the rest probably came out of the Sears or Montgomery Wards catalogs.

What a beautiful dress...my granddaughter would look adorable in your creation. I loved Goldsmith's which was a local department store and Macy's bought out. My grandmothers made the majority of the clothes for me. One making the smocked dresses and the other making the play clothes!
ReplyDeleteThat dress is so cute and would look adorable on my 3-year-old granddaughter who will soon be 4! My parents ordered lots of things from the Spiegl catalog and we did alot of shopping at Montgomery Wards or Sears for school clothes.
ReplyDeleteOH my goodness Patty what a BEAUTIFUL dress! You're a wonderful seamstress...I'd love to be able to sew like that. I too loved the old Sears Catalog and the Eaton's catalog too (Canada). Living in a small town in the mountains of British Columbia that's how I did most of my shopping. For kids clothes AND appliances furniture etc! My favorite store though was the Hudson's Bay Company in Winnipeg. I got to go to the city twice a year...once before Christmas to by gifts and once before school for clothes etc. This was back in the 60's when big department stores were beautiful and very fancy with lounges that had fountains and fancy restaurants. Sigh...they sure don't make them like that anymore ...that is unless it's Harrod's in London! Anyway...that's my story and I'm sticking with it ;)

Such an adorable little dress. I used to make dresses for our 3 daughters. I remember going to Sears and getting 3 dresses, such a treat. I also used to love going to downtown Toronto and shopping in the bargain basement at Eatons.
