you've come a long way baby...

I let it happen again.  Maybe it's the heat, the lack of structure that summer brings or the copious amount of time I've spent in my sewing room but I have fallen into the comfy capri pants and tee shirt rut that I vowed to stay out of last year.

It is so easy when you don't leave the house, or if you leave the house but don't get out the car, or if you leave the house get out of the car but only run into where ever (grocery store, post office, bank, etc.) for just a quick second, not to think of how you look.

I am all for every once in a while giving yourself a break and chilling in your comfiest of clothes but when the people closest to you start asking in subtle ways if you're ever going to wear all those things you bought last year, or whatever happened to those fashion posts you used to do, or even gasp, if your husband says, "do you want to go and buy a few new things", (I know, right?) then it's time to get it together and make an effort.

So I've made myself an appointment to get my hair done, I've gone through my makeup and noted what needs replacing and I've even decided to start doing a Wednesday fashion post again, at least a couple of times a month, starting next week.

You know what's partly to blame for this awakening?  The purging and cleaning around the house I started earlier in the week.  It seems creating order in one area of life inspires you to make changes in other ones as well.  And this little ditty from Singer circa 1949 didn't help anything either.

Boy, have things changed.  You've come a long way baby.  I'm not sure if us coming so far in the last 60 years is a good thing or not?  Do chime in...

xo, Patty

  1. Oh my... what a great post. It is so darn hard not to wear those comfy clothes especially when you are only going to leave the house once to go to the grocery store. However, then you have to hope no one sees you. Good reminder that if I am saying that to myself, I really need to shape up.
And that Singer ditty is priceless!!!
    Thanks for sharing.
BTW---I am loving all the things you are making. It is hard to stop when you are a roll like that.

  3. Oh my goodness that Singer Sewing Machine notice is a laugh . . . of course we all feel better when we look nice, but hey . . . I look nice in jeans and a tee shirt and if my husband and company only saw me when I was wearing make-up . . . well, they would rarely see me, LOL.
Have a great day . . . do what makes you happy :)

  7. That Singer advice makes me laugh. Do you think it must absolutely be FRENCH chalk to dust your fingers with? Hahaha. I'm right there with you. Some days I wear the old cruddy clothes and some days I make the effort. I have recently decided that some of the things I save for best really need to be worn every day. When they wear out I'll buy more, but I have to get out of this mindset that looking good every day doesn't matter. It matters, especially the older I get. I need that boost!

  8. It's not capri pants for me but the oldest rattiest jeans in my closet....day after day after day. I look at all the fashion posts and in my mind I'm dressing cute. Only in my mind though. :)

Glad to know I'm not the only one who pulls plants out that aren't doing the right thing.

  10. Those bags are fantastic! I LOVE the camper one. I know what you mean about cleaning and then feeling so inspired to change something else. Funny advice from Singer, ha ha!

  11. Patti,
I think I hear the theme song to "Leave It To Beaver" in the background of this post!!!
Do you remember "Mrs. Cleaver" all fresh, hair combed, make~up applied apron on
welcoming hubby and the boys back home with a platter of pot roast in her hands???
    We've come a l o n g way, dear friend!!! AMEN!!!
I enjoyed your Fashion posts. . .looking forward to seeing them return!!!
Perhaps you could do a photo shoot at the Sewing Machine!!! (wink!)
    Fondly,
    Pat

  12. Not me. I am for comfort at home and working outside. Fashion does not enter my mind but then it was a rare thing for me to follow the fashions ever. I have my own sense of "style" which is mainly around comfort. Notice a pattern here?
From having sewn most of my clothing through life and getting lucky with some jeans here and there, I rarely think of vanity. My husband does not complain nor has anyone else. Another thing that influences my style is poverty. I do "clean up good" and the rest of time I am what and who I am.

  13. Oh my, things certainly have changed!! Don't worry about being in your comfies. We have earned the right to do so. We give, and we give. And I know your story girlfriend, so I can safely say, being home, in your comfies, in front of the sewing machine, is awesome therapy for all that we do. Spoil yourself, I say. You are in your element when you are creating! Just as I am.
    Love,
    Kris
